Inside Munford’s Beloved Art Studio — Calico Cottage

Discover the story behind our family-run art studio in Munford, TN. For over 40 years, Calico Cottage has been a creative hub for kids, families, and aspiring artists of all ages.

Our Story

Calico Cottage has been part of Munford’s creative heartbeat for over 40 years. Founded by Mrs. Gail, Richie’s grandmother, it was a place where kids and families could experience the joy of art in a warm, welcoming space.

We’re Richie and Rori Newbill—a husband and wife team proud to continue that legacy. Richie, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, grew up in this very shop—washing brushes, setting up classes, and witnessing how art brought the community together. Rori now leads the classes with that same spirit of creativity, energy, and love for teaching that has always defined Calico Cottage.

Rori holds an associate’s degree from the University of Mount Olive and a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Together, we’re passionate about making art fun, affordable, and a meaningful part of everyday life in our community.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. If I could give this instructor ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️+ stars, I would! Taking Rori’s class didn’t just teach me how to paint/draw. It completely rewired the way I see the world. Before this, I was hesitant and frustrated, but Rori has this magical ability to look at a chaotic sketch and pinpoint exactly how to bring it to life. Her patience is unmatched, her knowledge is ocean-deep, and she will push you past your comfort zone in the most encouraging way possible. I honestly feel like I’ve leveled up more in these few sessions here than in years of self-teaching. Do not walk....RUN....to get instructed by Rori. It is an Absolute Privilege to learn from an instructor who genuinely cares about your artistic soul!!!
